Hauz of ML meets Mumbai with Love

By Brittany Nawaqatabu

The Pacifique Artisans Collective’s MAKETE Fashion Show returned in July with emerging designers showcasing collections inspired by the theme, “From Mumbai with Love.”

Amongst vibrant colors, cultural undertones and proud designers was the Hauz of ML line, designed by Luisa Qiolevu, who is more commonly known by her brand name ‘Mami Lugi’. Hailing from Nakorovou, Dreketi in Rewa with maternal links to Navukilagi, Gau, Lomaitviti, Luisa is marking her fourth year as a designer.

Aligned with the theme of the evening, The Hauz of ML collection featured shades of orange, red and blues.

“The different colors on my designs reflect my character. I am very bubbly and friendly, she shared.

“Compared to the previous years as a junior, I can tell that I have improved a lot… My lines are more colourful now and I am getting a grip of what fashion designing is all about,” she said.

Qiolevu said that although passion for designing keeps her going, the financial demands of being part of the industry continue.

“One of the biggest challenges in my business is the rising cost of raw materials and equipment. Most of the fabrics, leather, printing supplies, and accessories we use are imported, so shipping costs and exchange rates have a direct impact on our pricing. Labour is another major expense because quality craftsmanship takes time and skilled hands”

“Besides that, it is trying to lock in the right design as well as look for inspiration in nature and culture and combining it and calling it my own,” she added.

She shared that at times she had to outsource specialised services or production when demand is higher than her in-house capacity.

“While outsourcing helps us meet deadlines, it also increases production costs. As a small business, balancing affordability for customers while maintaining high-quality products is a constant challenge. Despite this, I remain committed to producing quality work and continuing to grow my business sustainably.”

Qiolevu leans on her strong faith as she navigates the challenges of the industry.

“Being a business owner and fashion designer meant I had to trust in myself and not rely too much on anyone else because people won’t be there over time. It is always going to be me and God,” she shared.

Having changed careers five times before finding her place in the fashion industry, Qiolevu encourages emerging designers in Fiji and the Pacific not to let fear become a barrier to pursuing their dreams.

She worked in the NGO sector, where she focused on community development, empowering people, and advocating for positive change. She then became a trainer and facilitator, teaching practical skills and mentoring others to start or improve their own businesses.

“I have worked in business and entrepreneurship, building my own brand from the ground up while learning finance, marketing, and leadership.”

She reflects: “Every career has given me valuable skills that I now use in my business. Never be afraid to step into a new career, step out of your comfort zone. You wouldn’t know what you have until you tap into it,” she said.

“My advice is to never give up, even when the journey is difficult. Building a business requires patience, resilience, and consistency. Don’t be afraid to start small, because every successful business begins with a single step.”

“Keep learning, invest in your skills, and don’t compare your journey with anyone else’s. Focus on producing quality work, treat your customers with respect, and always operate with integrity. There will be criticism, setbacks, and challenges, but if you remain passionate and committed to your vision, your hard work will eventually speak for itself.” She added.

The Makete fashion show was created by the Suva Flea Market to support Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). This month’s show was the third edition.
